Wroclaw is the economic, cultural and intellectual capital of Lower Silesia. The city is located in the south-west of Poland, approximately 120 km from Czech Republic and 160 km from Germany. With population of about 700000, Wroclaw has a well-developed and prosperous light industry, trade and service sectors. There are an international airport, railway connection and river port in the city. This is also the regional educational centre with 8 higher educational institutions. There are 9 museums, several theatres and music centers, botanical garden and a Zoo in Wroclaw. The city is located on several islands and is connected with the mainland by 117 bridges. Only three cities in Europe can boast of such a great amount of bridges and canals. Those are St.-Petersburg, Amsterdam and Venice.
Wroclaw is not only the educational and commercial center of Poland, but also rather a popular travel destination. There are several reasons why it is called the Silesia Pearl. It is a wonderful city with interesting history, the city that you will definitely want to visit while staying in Poland. From historical point, Wroclaw's market square is one of the most outstanding and beautiful squares in Europe. The city hall with its gothic interior is simply amazing.
Besides the beauty of the old city, Wroclaw is the homeland for the European oldest beer tavern - «Piwnica Swidnica». And it is located not in some unknown place, but in the Wroclaw Town Hall's cellar.
Wroclaw is the "greenest" city of Poland. The oldest and the largest city park was founded here already in the 18th century and has more than 370 tree and bush species. It is no wonder that in spring, when azaleas and rhododendrons are in bloom, the park burns with colors.
Wroclaw is also a cultural centre. Lots of annual music festivals won't make you feel bored. For example, February is the time for Modern Polish Music, March - for the actor's song, in May there is a Jazz Festival held in Wroclaw whereas in June and July the city invites you for Wroclaw «non stop» with lots of shows and other entertainment.
There are also some unique attractions found in the city. World famous Raclawice Panorama is located in a huge rotunda where one can observe a 120-meter canvas depicting fight between Polish rebels and the Russian army. The panorama was created in the 19th century but got to Poland during the Second World War and stayed here.
The most beautiful part of the city is found on the Tumski Island - the place of real peace and calm. This is also one of the most interesting European spots for religious architecture. The best time to visit this place is in the evening, when lamps illuminate the most interesting parts of the buildings. A truly wonderful sight!
