Salzburg is often called the Alpine heart of Austria, full of mountains and lakes. Mountain giants covered with snow rise as high as the sky and there, upstairs, eternal glaciers shine in the sun. Zell am See (757 meters high) and Kaprun are located in Pinzgau region and together, they compose the famous Europa Sport Region (ESR). Europa Sport Region is truly an international place. Germans and Americans, young people and active families - all are anxious to get here. The reason for this is probably because both of the ski resorts are reasonably priced, especially if to consider the wide range of sports and rest opportunities here. For instance, Kitzsteinhorn is an all-year-round ski region located above Kaprun which guarantees absolutely safe snow cover and plenty of modern elevators. Wide middle-steep tracks in the Maurer and Schmidinger regions attract all kinds of ski admirers: those are not only snowboarders, but also "exotic" sportsmen and those who are fond of acrobatic feats and hillock lumping. There are several locations that are very popular among the tourists.

Maiskogel is rather an easy object, but families and not very ambitious skiers will definitely get lots of pleasure here. They come not for skiing only, but also to see excellent mountain views. Maiskogelalm slope is an excellent place for those who prefer virgin lands.
Glockner slopes attract those who prefer comfortable skiing. From here Areitbahn funicular railway will help you to get to Schmittenhoe - the central mountain in this region, suitable for real professionals. Sports tourists are also recommended to visit Kitzsteinhorn slopes. But what is special about this place is an excellent view from the mountain restaurant. All in all, there are lots of pubs, bars and restaurants here while the nightlife starts its action long before it gets dark.
Zell am See resort has the 800-year old history and boasts its city views. Luxury hotels as well as cheap sports boarding houses can be found here. This charming old town is located by the magnificent Alpine lake. Zell am See slopes are mostly suitable for middle-range skiers.

Saalbach and Hinterglemm towns are well known far beyond Austria. These towns are so close to each other that they are often called one resort. However, Saalbach looks more like a city whereas Hinterglemm is a kind of a village. This is one of the largest Austrian sports region, often called "the ski circus", thanks to its location in a valley and magnificent mountain circle that surrounds the place.
Bad Gastein is a famous hydrothermal resort located within 1.5 hours of Salzburg Airport. The resort lies 1002 meters above sea level and boasts its radon springs. As you can understand, there are lots of sports and sanitary complexes here that offer various kinds of medical treatment.
Bad Hofgastein is also a recreation resort that lies 858 meters above the sea and offers additional sports opportunities as well as health centers. Special resort attraction is a Spa-centre with lots of swimming pools, sauna and what not. You will also find sleigh and ski tracks here.
And, finally, one of the most interesting Salzburg ski resorts is Obertauern with lots of slopes to improve your techniques. You won't find a traditional track marking here, while there are directions of circular routes marked.
