A trip to the jungles of Amazon isn't something that anyone will like. Experienced people say that when going there, one must be in a special humour. A month of rich adventurous life in the Amazon selva will cost you approximately $5 thousand.
The basin of the Amazon is often called "the planet's lungs" - it is covered with huge tropical forest - the jungles which occupy the territory of nine countries (spread on about 6 million square meters). The river itself if filled with 2 thousand fish species, and the nearby territory is inhabited by a great amount of birds and mammals. Those in search of extreme and pseudoextreme come here. But irrespective of what tourists arrive here for, they make for city of Manaus, the capital of Amazonas State. You can get there by plane from Rio (your flight will take approximately 2 hours). The city stands on the Negro River, a few kilometers from where it flows into the Rio Solimões. These two rivers form the Amazon River.
Manaus is a very intriguing city: it became world popular during the 20th century rubber boom, when it was growing rapidly. The Teatro Amazonas, an opera house was built at that time and can still be observed there. Thanks to natural rubber, Manaus became the first Brazilian city where electricity and trolleybuses appeared. The opera house was the symbol of the city - a beautiful construction in the jungles, a unique combination.
Nowadays Manaus is the pseudoextreme heaven, with lots of pousadas - jungle hotels - built around it. A standard travel programme includes sightseeing and two or three days in pousada, during which tourists get familiar to the Amazon flora and fauna, stroll in the jungles, go in for paddling or get acquainted with traditions followed by local people - caboclos. A trip like this seems to be an imitation of extreme trip and you should not expect a meeting with real Indian tribes of jaguars. Real adventures start in remote Amazonia districts. Such tours are organized in a different way. For instance, you can come to Manaus from Rio de Janeiro and then take a plain and go to the small Barcelos town in the headstream of Amazon. There you can hire a motor-launch or canoes and go along one of the Amazon tributaries. Some time after the river becomes unnavigable. Then you have to leave your boat and carry canoes on your backs. Tourists reach a picturesque mountain about 300 kilometres from Barcelos to climb which, one has to cut through the forest. But this is worth it: from here, you will enjoy wonderful views over the Guiana Plateau. This is the point where people are left on their own, discovering unexplored places. Of course, there is a guide that leads the group who knows what to do in this or that situation. The leader bears a great responsibility, but all the rest in his group participate in this trip as equals. For instance, they help get and cook food - it is a real pleasure to prepare a turtle or a piranha that you caught by yourself. You can also hunt - here you don't need a license for this. It is next to impossible to meet wild beasts in Amazonia. However, that doesn't mean that there aren't any. For instance, jaguars live in the jungle - but when encounting a human, they are most likely to run away. At the same time, there are lots of howling monkeys here, shocking tourists with their bawls.
The trip lasts about a month as your way up-stream will be slow. The best time for this is May to November, when it rains less and the weather is better - thanks to this orientation will be easier. The basic price is $5 thousand. The trip is not something that will suit anyone - some travel agents even try to talk tourists out of it: mosquitos will bite you despite all your repellents, exercise stress is great, because of the stable water level, river can carry away your things. But despite all the asperities, you come back to civilization assured that you've passed tests to check your courage and stamina.
